The dumbwaiter cabin moves by a different amount depending on whether the door is open or closed. Experiment until you get it right.

Possible solution:

Press up with the door closed. Press down with the door open. Press up with the door closed. Press down with the door open.

Once you have it aligned, tap to get in, then tap to get out at the kitchen level.

Once you have examined the scene and found the dying clue, you can go back up the regular way.
