Why didn't the Mayor want the disappearances investigated?
Mr. Gordon, the Mayor and Roy the financial planner had formed a cabal to protect the town from the aliens and from the secret itself. They determined that the truth of the alien invasion and, in fact, the whole formation of the town through a time paradox was too much information for the quaint townsfolk to handle (it is a very kindly cabal that way).
