“In approximately one hour, a person in this restaurant will expire,” said the assassin.

“Branzino bone in the windpipe?”

“No, Mr. Kingsley.”

“Bad gnocchi?”

“No. This will progress much faster if you refrain from interrupting. The person will die at my hand. Or, more accurately, at the hand of one I instruct. You and you alone have it in your power to prevent that death.”

“I have?” asked the bodyguard.

“You have, indeed. That is, if you consent to a certain contest. A duel, if you like.”

​Warren didn’t like. “What kind of contest or duel?”

“A duel of intellect.”

​Warren was afraid of that. He hated those kinds of duels.
