A Solo Performance

Following the events in FLEETING PROMISE, world-renowned and formerly retired private investigator Enescu Fleet has retired — temporarily — to the backwoods of Maine. No sooner does he step out from his rustic cabin than he and his trusted Maltese encounter another high-flown mystery, complete with pompous murder victim taunting him from the grave.

Can Fleet solve the man's baffling clue? Or will this rest and relaxation end in the PI's final resting place?

Fleet stood up and gave his new friend Mary a comforting smile. His dog Pixie had run off again, and he figured he ought to track her down, lest she should go disturbing any more ethereal young women of the forest.

“I’ve found our discussion extremely diverting,” he said. “But I wouldn’t concern yourself too much with the premonitions of any whacky old orchestral directors.”

“No?”

“No. A lifetime of frenzied baton waving cannot be good for a man; it addles the brain. I don’t think the maestro has foreseen his own murder. All in all, I’m inclined to side with your associate Barker and consider the whole thing—what was that incisive word he likes to call things?”

Her associate Barker liked to call things “hooey,” but Mary had no opportunity of repeating it. A far-off yell, in the pitch and tempo of a whacky old orchestral director yelling his last, broke in on their discussion.

“On the other hand,” said Enescu Fleet.
