FLEET TIMING

AN ENESCU FLEET STORY

Fleet's R & R continues to be disturbed, this time by a very tiny, very costly jewelry heist. This is FLEET TIMING, a literary-themed short story.

Timing Is Everything

Enescu Fleet cannot seem to get a moment to himself. The semiretired private detective is approached by a pair of literature fanatics recently relieved of a priceless timepiece.

As Fleet begins reconstructing the theft, he realizes his new clients are not the only ones running out of time.

“What do you know of the Heures du Roi, Mr. Fleet?”

“The million-dollar wristwatch?”

“That is correct. Only twelve exist in the world, and they’re easily the finest timepieces ever made. Yesterday evening, my sister gave Victor one to celebrate their engagement.”

“And he lost it?”

“It was stolen!” blurted out Victor Cavendish.

“It was my fault, I’m afraid,” continued Phillip Benjamin. “Beverly gave Victor the watch at a cocktail party, an hour before our banquet. She suggested he put it in the hotel safe because of his, well, history. But I insisted—”

“What history would this be?” asked Fleet.

Mr. Benjamin shared a look with his future brother-in-law. “Victor misplaces things,” he said.

And not just trifles evidently. As Mr. Benjamin went on to detail, Victor had become something of a legendary misplacer in recent months. This list included a prized first edition, the family Rolls-Royce, his elderly mother’s platinum wedding ring and, at one point, the elderly mother herself.
